Understanding High Phosphorous and Your Treatment Options Brochure Now Available From AAKP

Tampa, Fla., October 10, 2006 – The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) today announced the publication of a new patient education brochure, Understanding High Phosphorus and Your Treatment Options.

This 13 page brochure is designed to give patients a better understanding of the effects of hyperphosphatemia (high phosphorus), how phosphate binders work and how eating well can help balance the body’s phosphate levels.

High phosphorus levels can be dangerous for kidney disease patients. “Studies have found elevated phosphate increases the risk of death for people with chronic kidney disease,” says AAKP CEO/Executive Director Kris Robinson. “This new brochure is intended help patients avoid that risk and provide them with tips to stay healthy.”

Phosphorus, in the proper amounts, is important for the growth and maintenance of body tissues. Phosphorus is released from food into the stomach during digestion. The main food sources are the protein food groups of meat and milk.

The brochure was made possible by a grant from Shire.  For a free copy of the brochure, contact the AAKP National Office at (800) 749-2257 or download it from the Web at www.aakp.org.
