How to Run a Good Meeting

Here are some tips on how to run a productive meeting:

  • Don't compete with group members. Give everyone the opportunity to share their ideas.

  • Listen to everyone. Paraphrase what was just said to ensure the idea presented was communicated clearly to the group.

  • Don't put anyone on the defensive. Everyone's ideas have value and should be considered.

  • Control the dominant people without alienating them. It is very easy for a meeting to veer off course; remind everyone what the goal and purpose of the meeting is to ensure the meeting is productive.

  • Realize that your interest and alertness is contagious.

  • Give others a turn at running the meeting. Those who learn to lead, learn how to participate.
