Leadership Training: Resolving Conflicts
  • Be proactive instead of reactive. Anticipating a problem is the first step in solving it.
  • Be slow to anger-especially over insignificant issues. Keeping the "big picture" in mind will help decide which issues are worth addressing and which are best left alone.

  • Instead of telling people they are wrong, point out mistakes indirectly. Constructive criticism and offering different ways of reaching a goal is an excellent way to get your volunteers back on track without being defensive.

  • Look for some type of common ground as soon as possible. If a conflict does arise within your support group, be sure to address it immediately and come to a mutually accepted decision before the situation gets out of hand.

  • Admit one of your own mistakes before pointing out a similar error by others. Being a leader means accepting responsibility for your support group as well as for any decisions you make.

  • Mend fences whenever possible. Everyone in your support group is working toward the same goal. Do not let personal differences interfere with the overall support group goal.
