More Fruits and Veggies, Less Salt Prevent Kidney Stones From Forming

A study in the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN) states eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, low-fat dairy products and whole grains, while limiting salt, red and processed meats and sweetened beverages is an effective way to prevent kidney stones.  Kidney stones are linked to higher rates of hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Eric Taylor and his colleagues assigned a score to each participant based on DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension).  Participants with the highest DASH scores were less likely to develop kidney stones than participants with low DASH scores.
