According to research conducted by the University of Georgia, the spice cabinet may be a great source of help for diabetes patients. Some of the most commonly used dried herbs and spices may help block the inflammation believed to feed diabetes and other chronic diseases.
Researchers tested extracts from 24 common herbs and spices and found many contain high levels of inflammation inhibiting antioxidant compounds called polyphenols. The use of herbs and spices instead of salt can also positively effect diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease patients.
Here are some ways to introduce herbs and spices into your diet:
Add Italian seasonings to your pasta sauce.
Introduce oregano to your eggs.
Try marjoram or sage in your next dish.
Use cinnamon in your oatmeal.
Although herbs and spices may have beneficial effects, always check with your dietitian or physician to find out which are best for you.
