To Eat or Not To Eat During Dialysis

A recent article in the Nephrology Nursing Journal debated the topic of whether hemodialysis patients should be allowed to eat during therapy. Many renal professionals are torn about this topic and find themselves on the "pro" and "con" side of the argument.

Pro:

  •   Many patient have diabetes, thus consistency with diet, exercise and insulin regime is important to maintaining control of blood glucose levels.
  • Small meals or snacks during treatments can improve or at least maintain nutritional status.
  • Patients may miss meals if not allowed to eat during dialysis treatments.

Con:

  •  Patients who eat during treatment often experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. This may cause them to end treatment early.
  • May lead to less-than-desired Kt/V results.
  • Safety and liability reasons.

This argument warrants more research and dialysis facilities will need to develop policies and inform patients of any potential risks.
