Foods and Fluid

Water is necessary for life, but too much fluid can be harmful to a person with kidney disease. When the kidneys do not work correctly, fluid balance can be upset, causing a rise in blood pressure and putting strain on the heart. Swelling and weight gain are two signs of retaining too much fluid. Limiting salt and sodium in your diet is one of the best ways to prevent taking in too much fluid.

Water is found in many foods including fruits, vegetables and even meat! Anything that melts at room temperature is also considered fluid.

Some foods with hidden fluid include:

    • Fruits and vegetables
    • Meats
    • Soups
    • Gelatin, frozen treats, ice cream, popsicles, sherbet

It is important to talk to your physician or renal dietitian about the best ways to prevent fluid overload.
