With all of the challenges kidney disease patients face in regards to their healthcare and diet, consulting a dietitian is a must. However, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) urges all consumers that not all nutritionists are qualified to give you nutrition advice.
Individuals seeking the expertise of a dietitian should look for the RD (Registered Dietitian) credential. RDs know the science of nutrition.
"Our required degrees in food, nutrition, dietetics, public health or related fields such as biochemistry, medicine or a nutrition specialty in family and consumer sciences come from well-respected, accredited colleges and universities," states Connie B. Diekman, President of the ADA.
So, next time you have an appointment with your physician or dietitian, make sure you ask about their credentials.
