According to a new study, one type of dialysis treatment is not best for all patients undergoing the therapy. A study appearing in this month's issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN) found certain patient characteristics, such as age, health and timing, should be factored into which type of dialysis is best for patient survival.
While both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are effective treatments for kidney disease, it is not clear which is best for patients survival. Research showed the type of dialysis treatment administered should be based on quality of life, patient satisfaction, mortality risks and practice expertise.
It is important to work with your health care team to determine the best treatment method for you and your lifestyle.
