Doctors in the Washington, D.C. area performed a record breaking seven kidney transplant. Seven kidney donors and seven kidney recipients came together at Georgetown University for the historic procedures.
The transplants were made possible thanks to a new procedure. It's called plasmapheresis. The process virtually eliminates the chances of organ rejection, making it easier for African-Americans to receive kidney transplants. Of the 80,000 people on the kidney transplant list, 36 percent are African-American but only 15 percent of living donor kidneys go to African-Americans.
