A new study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases found depression among kidney transplant recipients doubles the risk of kidney failure, return to dialysis and death. Researchers say concerns about transplant rejection, infection, readjustment to everyday life and use of immunosuppressive medications can lead to emotional problems in the early years after kidney transplantation.
Depression screening and periodic reassessment is crucial to determine which patients should be referred for specialized mental health treatment.
