Recurring Diseases Following a Transplant

An entry from the Renal Fellow Network found several diseases have a high possibility of recurring after a kidney transplant.  Nearly any primary glomerulopathy has the possibility of recurring following a kidney transplant; however, the frequency and severity this occurs varies greatly.

Here is a list of some diseases with a high rate of recurrence following kidney transplant:

  • Primary membranous nephropathy: About 30 percent recurrence rate.
  • Primary hyperoxaluria: This disease occurs essentially 100 percent of the time unless it is performed as a dual liver-kidney transplant.
  • Diabetic nephropathy: Occurs about 50 percent of the time following transplant.
  • Primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: About 40 percent of cases will recur.

Talk to your nephrologist to find out if you're at risk for these recurring diseases.
