A disposable blood sugar sensor worn under the skin monitors blood sugar 24 hours a day, which may benefit type 1 diabetes patients. The "continuous glucose monitor" is worn for a few days and then replaced. The sensor sends data to a transmitter which then sends it to a receiver worn like a pager. The receiver displays blood glucose levels on a continuous basis.
In a study, continuous glucose monitoring helped individuals gain better control of their diabetes compared to conventional intermittent blood sugar management.
