Pain Management for Kidney Patients
This educational conference call will focus on different types of pain experienced by Pre-ESRD and ESRD patients as well as ways to possibly manage those pains. Emphasis will be placed on explaining neuropathy for kidney patients at all stages along with pain associated with dialysis; such as needle sticks and cramping. Information on how to explain pain to your healthcare team and why it is important to communicate your level of pain will also be discussed.
Speakers:
Stephen Fadem, MD, FACP, FASN
Dr. Fadem is a practicing nephrologist and owner of Kidney Associates in Houston, TX. He is co-medical editor of aakpRENALIFE and Kidney Beginnings: The Magazine. Dr. Fadem currently serves as Vice President of AAKP and is a member of AAKP's Medical Advisory Board. He is an AAKP Life Member and also serves as AAKP's Life Membership Chairperson.
Dianne Halderman, RN, CHPN
Ms. Halderman is currently a dialysis nurse for DaVita. During this time, she has been a major advocate for ESRD patients in regards to pain and symptom management. Ms. Halderman is also a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse and continues to work with ESRD patients through the Kidney End-of-Life Coalition. This Coalition was formed to help educate Hospice and Palliative Care Organizations as well as nephrologists and dialysis clinics around the country on how to provide appropriate pain management care to kidney patients.
Renee Bova-Collis, MSW, LCSW
Ms. Bova-Collis is a member of AAKP's Board of Directors. She is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Virginia and has 13 years experience working with adult and pediatric dialysis patients. Ms. Bova-Collis is currently the Patient Services Coordinator for Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition. She is responsible for handling patient grievances and complaints, as well as providing education, resources and supportive services to the renal community of Network 5 (overseeing D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia) in the pursuit of quality patient-provider relations.
