My Phosphorus is High and My Dietitian Tells Me to “Tailor” My Binder to the Phosphorus in the Meal. How Do I Do This?

By Maria Karalis, RD, LD, CSR

Generally, “tailoring” means that higher phosphorus foods and larger meals may require more phosphate binders.  Phosphorus is found in many foods we eat and that is why it is important for you to know as much as you can about your renal diet. Foods high in phosphorus can be found in Table 1.  Dialysis removes some phosphorus so it is important that you do not skip or shorten your treatments.  Remember the three D’s for successful phosphorus control: drugs (your binders), diet and dialysis.
