I’m Looking for a Reference That Lists the Potassium and Phosphorus Content of Foods. What do You Recommend?

By Maria Karalis, RD, LD, CSR

An item that might be helpful as a quick reference is AAKP’s “Na-K-Phos Counter.” This is a 14-page pocket-size brochure. It provides the amounts of sodium (Na), potassium (K) and phosphorus (Phos) in the standard sizes of various types of food. Available in both English and Spanish, this brochure provides an excellent guide for dialysis patients.

The reference that I use is called “Bowes & Church’s Food Values of Portions Commonly Used” by Jean A. T. Pennington. It lists about 8,500 foods in 35 food categories, including sections on fast foods, frozen entrees and snack foods. It can be ordered through your local bookstore or through www.amazon.com. One drawback is that this reference is expensive - a new book will cost about $48.00.
