I Was Just Diagnosed with Kidney Disease and I'm Looking for a Low-Protein Cookbook. What Do You Suggest?

By Maria Karalis, RD, LD, CSR

"Low Protein Cookery" is an excellent low-cost cookbook containing 64 low-protein recipes*. It also provides helpful hints and menu plans to help you follow a low protein diet. Most important, never follow a low protein diet without the supervision of a Registered Dietitian or RD. The risk of following this type of diet without seeking nutrition counseling by a Registered Dietitian is malnutrition. Therefore, it is critical to make an appointment with a Registered Dietitian to assess your individual needs. The RD will provide you with a meal plan that includes how many servings from each food group to eat each day. Ask your kidney doctor about a referral to an RD.

*Low Protein Cookery can be ordered by sending a check or money order for $8 payable to Capital Health, 670 Community Service Centre, Royal Alexandra Hospital, 10240 Kingsway Ave., Edmonton, AB T5H 3V9, Attn: Nutrition Service Secretary, or fax request to 780-735-5105.
