Fortunately, patients are able to choose from a variety of hemodialysis access devices. However, it can often be confusing when deciding which method to use. To guide patients in choosing the most suitable form of hemodialysis access for their lifestyle, AAKP developed the educational brochure “Understanding Your Hemodialysis Access Options.”
This brochure informs and educates patients on the various access options in hemodialysis. In addition, it offers a brief description of arteriovenous fistulas, grafts, catheters and subcutaneous access devices, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of each. Also included is a brief section on properly caring for each kind of access. The brochure is an important resource for patients beginning hemodialysis, as well as current hemodialysis patients who wish to change their access device.
The “Understanding Your Hemodialysis Access Options” brochure is available from the AAKP National Office. For more information or to request a copy, please call (800) 749-2257 or send an e-mail to info@aakp.org. The brochure is also available in its entirety, in English or Spanish, by clicking here.
